The last couple of weeks, I’ve been eating lots of edamame. It seems like an amazingly healthy food. It’s low in fat, low in net carbohydrates, high in protein, and high in fiber. It’s also very cheap and very portable. I like the taste so much that I made it my meal a couple of times last week while I was on the road.

Last night’s news might have changed all that. I had known that soy has had ties to the estrogen levels in men. I somewhat conveniently forgot this fact for all the other good reasons to eat edamame. I was reminded by the evening news last night when they highlighted a report from Harvard University that soy may lower sperm count. The researchers concluded by saying, “It’s way too early to say stop eating soy foods. It’s not time to worry about whether you’re eating too much soy. There’s not enough information to conclusively say that. ”

That puts me a pickle. Should I stop eating soy to be safe? What if helps me be more healthy in a way that would increases sperm count? Sometimes it seems like research just brings us more questions and fewer answers.

Happy Fourth of July to all my readers in the United States. Today can be a disastrous day for your diet. Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Beer, and side dishes full of mayonnaise. If you are celebrating, try to exercise a little caution today.

Here’s my overall body update:
Overall Body Stats
I have measured my body in the morning two weeks in a row now. When do I consider it an actual streak?

Weight: 170.0 pounds

Body Fat: 18.95%

I gained a half pound this week… well within a little water weight error margin. I dropped my body fat from 20.05% to 18.95%. That’s a very healthy gain, but I’m trying to temper my excitement. It too, is within the fluctuation a body experiences every day, so I need to focus on things in the long run.

Exercise
I had a good week of exercise. Even though I had a set-back with my 100 pushups program, I did more than any previous weeks. I also swam four days this week pushing myself to do 60 pool lengths twice.

Today, I’m thinking about skipping the 100 pushups program on purpose. I’ve already failed for the week, so my thinking is, let’s switch things up. What about going to the gym and doing bench presses, butterflies, and lat pull-downs? My body can’t be expecting that. With two days of rest before I start the pushups again, I should be stronger and ready to battle.

Eating and Nutrition
This week I discover that I really like dry, roasted edamame, perhaps the most perfect I’ve seen in some time. It’s almost pure protein and fiber. In fact, I got a little addicted to it and found myself occasionally missing meals in favor of it. My biggest concern is that there is some hormone risks with soy in men.

Outside the edamame, I’ve been very good at reducing net carbs, while increasing protein and fiber in my meals. A couple of times I upped my red meat in hope that it would combat the risks of soy. Okay, that might be what I’d telling myself as I really like red meat.

That’s all I have for this week, it seems I’m on the right track, but next week gets more difficult when I search for hotel friendly food.

Next week, I’m going to be taking the show on the road. Specifically, I’ll be going from north California to south California. During the day, I’m going to be working and exercising as I normally would. At night, my wife and I will explore Laguna Beach and the surrounding area.

When it comes to my diet, I have a problem. The hotel we are staying at won’t have a refrigerator or a microwave. I’m trying to compile a list of breakfast and lunch foods that are healthy and won’t break the bank. So if I were to have cereal, I’d have to experiment with powered milk. I could get creative and warm something with hair dryer but that’s a little further than I want to take it.

Here are some items that I’m thinking of:

Peanut Butter & Fluff Sandwiches – It’s not as healthy as I’d like, but it’s portable.

Meal Replacement Bars – Power Bars, South Beach Bars, etc. These are not really cheap, but I can get them at a very good price at the local military base. I’m satisfied with the healthiness of this option.

Cereal – I was thinking that I could have it dried. I’ve never had powered milk before. Is it an acquired taste?

Edamame – I have to give a tip of the hat to Weight Loss Journal for this idea. I have no idea how much they’ll be, but I know they are healthy – as long as it doesn’t impact my hormone levels too much.

Fruit – This is pretty straight-forward. Apples, oranges, etc. make for a healthy snack. I might bring a couple of bushels of these.

Nuts – Good source of protein and good fats.

Dried Fruit – It’s a good additive to cereal, nuts, or just on it’s own

Beef Jerky – I know there’s a lot of sodium in beef jerky, but it’s a great source of lean protein.

So this is where you come in. What foods am I missing?
