Suunto wrist-top computer

Nike + iPod Sport Kit

Adidas-Polar Project Fusion

Diet and Exercise Assistant for Palm OS

Garmin Forerunner

Wii Fit

PumpOne

It was cool to see the Wii Fit in there, I recently tried out the unit at a Safeway National Capital BBQ Battle and came away very impressed with the unit. I don’t know if it will really help you get in shape but it certain can assist in helping understand your own balance and equilibrium.

As for the other gadgets, some are pricey and specific – I don’t really know what I’d do with a $220 Suunto t2c wrist-top computer. It can monitor your heart rate, caloric burn in real time, and upload that data to a personal training program.

Daddy, I'm Too Busy For Exercise Now

Don’t Let Being Too Busy Derail You

One of the most common complaints that many people have is that they are simply too busy for proper exercise. I know that I always have about 600 blogging tasks on my plate. When you consider how many activities the average person is involved in, as well as the fact that American workers are working longer hours than ever, it is easy to see why this may be the case. However, there are many easy ways that you can add exercise throughout your day without adding to your busy schedule.

Although many believe that in order to lose weight or get fit you have to have at least 30 minutes of exercise it is possible to break that 30 minutes into several small blocks. You can get the same benefit by exercising in three blocks of 10 minutes a day as you would if you did it all together. Of course this is impossible for certain types of exercise but there are ways that you can easily add these little bursts of activity throughout your day.

One of the easiest ways to get more exercise is simply by taking the stairs or parking further away. This gives you a chance to get a nice walk and an opportunity for burning calories (as well as saving a little gas. You can also try simply walking more around your office. Whether you hand deliver messages instead of relying on an instant messenger client or reschedule five-minute breaks to walk around the office you can easily start adding more opportunities to burn calories throughout your day.

Other simple fixes include taking small five-minute breaks for a little cardio. Now granted, this may be difficult in an office environment where you will interact with the public but there are ways to schedule these little breaks without becoming a laughing stock. You can go to the ladies or men’s room or even go outside (which is a perfect place to jump rope for a few minutes). During those five minute breaks try to move around more or you can even bring small hand weights to get in a little strength training. Of course you could also try to fit in a 100 pushup program.

You can also find more ways to exercise at home. Housework is actually a great aerobic exercise whether you are mopping the floor, carrying laundry up the stairs or even dusting. Try to put a little more effort into your cleaning to burn even more calories while you’re getting the job done. At the end of the night instead of spending 30 minutes watching television try getting off the couch and take a brief walk instead. If you really feel that you need to get some entertainment in front of a television in look into Wii Tennis or Wii Fit. These are very easy and fun. You may even find you are more relaxed and ready for bed as a result.

Don’t let the mindset that you are too busy to get exercise keep you from getting fit. As you can see there are many small ways you can easily fit in exercise throughout your day. Try brainstorming on your own and see how you can add small bursts of activity to your day. With a little creativity you can easily find ways to lose weight, get fit, and feel better.

This past weekend I went to Napa with my wife and a friend. I have to admit that I had a few too many drinks, ate a little too much food, and got less exercise than I should have. I’ve got buckle down hard over the next couple of weeks. In about ten days, I’m going away to Australia and Thailand and might be a similar situation – too much extra stuff going on and not as much focus on health.

Here are some links that I enjoyed from last week:

Israel is experiencing Consistent Weekly Weight Loss: 1 More Pound Lost. I’m still trying to figure out the photoshop trick.

Deflabbify is is able to get a 403% burn rate on Wii Fit Basic Run. I need to spend a little more time with the Wii Fit. It’s been gathering a little bit of dust lately.

J.D. is still Getting Fit Slowly, choosing to get some walks in while his leg is healing. I twisted my ankle a few weeks ago and I have to recommend swimming. For some reason, after each swim it felt like a million dollars.

Did you know that Michael Phelps Consumes 12,000 A Day? I had read 10,000 recently and was going to write an article about it. Since I’m Lazy, and Jim already has the article, just read his. If it helps pretend I wrote it .

Fit36 looks like he’s repeating Week 5 of his hundred pushup plan. I think I’ve almost completely given up on the program. I can’t seem to convince myself to do pushups any more. I think if the program was going to be successful for me, it would build a day of non-pushup exercise.

Weight Loss Journal has a 2.2 pound weight gain this week. It sounds like he’s got a great plan

NCN has found the Become A Swimmer. As I said earlier, I can’t recommend swimming enough. I’m glad that NCN has realized how good it is.

There’s a lot of talk in the health blogosphere about people taking a 100 pushup challenge. It started when Five Cent Nickel spread the word to a couple of bloggers. Several of these bloggers happen to be part of the Fitness Health Network. As I am part of that network word got to me relatively quickly.

What is the 100 Pushup Program?

You can find out more about the 100 Pushup Program at the official website. I’m not 100% sure if it’s scientifically proven to work. However, I checked with my doctor and she says I’m fit enough to give it a shot. (I didn’t have any doubts, but I like to check anyway, you should think about it as well before you start a health-fitness program.) The idea is to start off with a small amount of pushups and over the span of six weeks gradually build up to the time where you can make a good run at 100 consecutive pushups. Where do I start? You start with an initial test to see how many pushups you can do to start the program. On my initial test, I got to 20 before I tired. My muscles weren’t particularly tired, but my breathing was off and I just had to stop and breathe better to continue. I think I probably could have done another 6 more, but I’m okay to start with 20. With that information I was ready for day one. Day one Yesterday was day one. I did 5 sets of push-ups. The sets had 10, 10, 8, 6, and 16 push-ups in them. The first four sets are dictated by the program, while the last one varies from person to person. That last one is supposed to be the most you can do before tiring. I was very happy to be able to hit that 16 number. It gives me confidence that I’ll be able to get through this week – though the end of the week looks difficult with repetitions of 15, 13, 10, 10, and 15+ on the docket. I will try to continue Monday, Wednesday, and Friday workouts. I will supplement that with some juggling for exercise, and follow that up with some Wii Fit.

My pre-ordered Wii Fit arrived last night. For those who are new to this site, I’m a big believer in the Nintendo Wii for exercise and I find that I can play Wii Tennis for quite some time.

I only had a couple of minutes to play with the Wii Fit last night and a few more minutes today. Here are my findings thus far:

The Educational Set-up is Very Good – I often downplay the importance of balance and focus more on building muscle and aerobic activities. However, after the explanation, I can see how improving my balance could help me quite bit.

Wii Fit keeps the exercises fresh – Most of the activities you can do seem to be locked originally. However after just my first hour of play, I’ve unlocked more advanced options of the basic exercises and a couple new ones. Along the way, I’ve added quite a few minutes to my virtual Wii Fit bank. The bank is interesting in itself. I can see how I could be motivated to start saving up minutes.

I Need to Lose 11.5 pounds – While my BMI of around 23.5 is normal, it said I should aim for 22. I thought that would be easy, but then it calculated that I needed to lose 11.5 pounds. Hmm, that’s a lot more than I thought.

I Have No Balance – I thought I’d really like the soccer ball, but I can’t seem to lean to ball fast enough. By the time I get to where the soccer ball is going to be it’s by me. I then react to the next one a little late to watch it go by me as well. I’m better at the skiing. I improved my downhill time on the easy level from 1:27 to 50 seconds and it’s still not good enough. My Mii is very depressed at the end of any balance exercise.

I Look Ridiculous Trying to Hula Hoop – I had to shut all my shades, so no one can see. As ridiculous as I look, I could feel the effect of just a couple of minutes in my legs. I don’t know if I’m just really out of shape, or if working new muscles… probably a little bit of both.

I haven’t gotten time to really use this in detail, but I think it’s going to be a revolutionary product. I don’t know if it will succeed on it’s own (I suspect it will), but if nothing else it will be a gateway to another great product. Perhaps that product is similar and works like a skateboard, surfboard, snowboard, skis etc. It won’t replace the real thing, but if the software behind it is good, it will allow people to practice in the comfort of their home, before hitting the slopes or waves. It could also spark virtual competitions nationwide (a little like John Madden tournaments) where people are actually active. This is extremely close to happening – I’d expect to see it within the next year.
